Topic: Sharing the Gospel
An object lesson to teach kids how to find that balance in sharing the Gospel without leaving anything out.
Items Needed:
Lemonade Object Lesson
How many of you like just plain lemons? I can sort of stand them, but I can’t seem to eat a whole lemon. Offer a piece to a child and watch their face
Did you know that sharing the gospel with someone can be like a lemon? If they don’t want to hear that they are sinners, and that they can’t have the fun they are having now, then they take the gospel like a bitter lemon!
Well, what have we done in the past to make lemons taste better? Right! Made lemonade.
When we present the gospel in a way that doesn’t say, “Do this or I’ll hurt you” or “Do this, but if you don’t want to that’s okay too.” Or, “Sometimes it’s okay to lie or it’s okay to steal if you don’t have anything.” It’s like handing someone a lemon.
The pitcher represents us.
We have been given the commission to tell the world about God. So remember that lemon? This is the message with the lemon.
For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and the wages of sin is death. That’s a bitter message! Put Lemon Juice in Pitcher
But here’s the good news! We can still live a good life by doing what’s right! The gift of God is eternal life! We don’t have to steal to have a good time. Last I checked, playing cards or a board game was way more fun than stealing. You don’t have to worry about getting caught, or going to jail, or paying a hefty fee!
This is the sugar. The sweet part of the gospel. The part that makes the whole thing worth drinking! Put the Sugar in the Pitcher
The water is the Holy Spirit which we need to tell others about Christ. If you just had sugar and lemons, it’s hard to get it all. It's just sludge.
We need water to help spread it. We can't spread the gospel without the help from our pal, the Holy Spirit. Fill the Pitcher with Water from Gallon Jug
When you put everything together. You, the message, and both the good and the bad parts. See, you can’t have lemonade without ANY of them. We have to include the lemons to make us think about why the sugar is so sweet.
