Support parents in guiding their children toward a biblical perspective on challenges.

As children’s ministry leaders, one of the greatest opportunities we have is equipping parents to disciple their children at home. While we teach biblical truths in church, it is within the home that those lessons are reinforced daily. One key area where parents can have a profound influence is in the way they speak to their children.

Words have the power to shape a child’s identity, their view of God, and their ability to navigate life’s challenges. That’s why reframing negative statements into positive ones is such a crucial parenting skill.

The Power of Words in Scripture

The Bible consistently teaches us that words carry great weight. Proverbs 18:21 says, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Words can either build up or tear down. When a parent speaks negativity into a child’s life—whether about their behavior, abilities, or identity—it can take root and influence how they see themselves. On the other hand, reframing a negative statement into a positive one can inspire growth, confidence, and a biblical understanding of their worth.

Ephesians 4:29 reminds us, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." This isn’t just a verse for how we treat one another in the church; it applies to our children as well. When parents intentionally use words that build up rather than tear down, they reflect the heart of God.
