Kidology Theorem #27 - How can play time be transformed into learning time?

 Playfulness is Next to Godliness.

Kids love to play! It is their default mode. As teachers of kids, we need to recognize that during play is when kids learn best. It is a mistake to consider play time as separate from learning time. The best learning happens while kids are playing. Why do I say that “Playfulness is next to Godliness?” Because too often I hear playfulness belittled as though it is wasted time, childish time, or worse – a filler of time.

I believe that God is playful! When I look at creation itself, I see a God who had FUN making this crazy creative beautiful world. You have to admit, some of His creations are downright funny, and a few hysterically ugly. Hey! I’m not talking about people! I’m talking about some of the creatures you’ll find in nature books! But I know you thought it!

God teaches and touches us through play. We learn best in our “down time”. Why shouldn’t the kids we teach? Kids learn through play. A strategic intentional teacher takes advantage of this and never relegates play to merely “free time.”

How can play time be transformed into learning time?
