Are you prepared for special needs kids in your ministry? Here are 10 tips to help you!

We all know that for special events andholidays we will have plenty of visitors on our church campuses. No doubt we feel that crunch in children’s ministry. You have been planning and strategizing so you can have as seamless a day as possible. Some of you may have included plans for special needs kids but many of you may have not. With just a few ideas and a bit of preparation you can be ready for the special needs child and their parents.

What is a special needs kid? What might they look like? Special needs kids might be defined as any child who has special circumstances that cause them to learn or act differently. There are a wide variety of needs associated with kids who learn or act differently. They may have behavioral concerns or physical concerns and some may have difficulty interacting socially. There is not a plain answer to these questions. God has created each child uniquely and with purpose. Special needs children are no different.

Take a deep breath. It really is not as difficult or stressful as you think. Most parents of special needs kids want to know only two things when they bring their kids to your ministry: Will you love their child, and will they be accepted? First impressions really count in the case of special needs kids for both the parent and the child.
